Adrenal Exhaustion: Symptoms, Causes, and What You Can Do About It

If you’re battling weird cravings, tiredness, or middle-of-the-night heart racing, it’s not random. In this video, Dr. Carrie reveals hidden signs of adrenal exhaustion that are draining your energy and the real steps you can take today to start feeling alive again.

Adrenal Exhaustion: Symptoms, Causes, and What You Can Do About It

Feeling drained even after a full night’s sleep? Like your energy just never refills?

Hey everyone, I’m Dr. Carrie, a functional medicine doctor and adrenal recovery expert. If you feel exhausted, foggy, or wired but tired at night, your adrenal glands might be trying to tell you something.

In this video, we’re going to talk about adrenal exhaustion, what it is, the symptoms to look out for, and what you can do about it.

Let’s get started.

What Is Adrenal Exhaustion?

To understand adrenal exhaustion, you have to know what happens to your body under stress.

Your adrenal glands, which sit right above your kidneys, produce hormones like cortisol to help you respond to stress. It’s a natural, short-term response, like running away from danger. But we weren’t meant to live in that mode long-term.

When stress becomes constant, the adrenal glands stay switched on. Over time, they get worn down and struggle to produce enough cortisol. That’s when symptoms start to show up.

In functional medicine, we call this Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome. Adrenal exhaustion is the third stage, when cortisol production drops and multiple systems in your body start getting out of balance.

Symptoms to Watch For in Adrenal Exhaustion

Adrenal exhaustion doesn’t look the same for everyone, but here are the most common symptoms:

  • Constant tiredness, especially that mid-afternoon crash
  • Insomnia or waking up in the middle of the night with heart palpitations
  • Low blood pressure and feeling dizzy when standing
  • Worsening allergies or new sensitivities
  • Cold body temperature, even if you’re on thyroid meds
  • Menstrual irregularities and PMS
  • Salt cravings or constant thirst
  • Heart palpitations
  • Hypoglycemia or blood sugar crashes after meals

All these symptoms are connected. They come from hormone imbalances that ripple through your whole body. You might not have all of them, but if a few of these sound familiar, your adrenals could be struggling.

Root Causes of Adrenal Exhaustion

So what causes adrenal exhaustion? It’s not just one thing.

We’re talking about:

  • Diets high in sugar
  • Alcohol overuse
  • Smoking
  • Over-exercising or no exercise at all
  • Lack of sleep
  • Environmental toxins and chemicals
  • Long-term stress
  • Certain medications like antibiotics

Most people have a few of these going on at once. That’s why it’s important to look at the full picture, not just one symptom or one test.

What Testing Can Reveal About Adrenal Exhaustion

To confirm adrenal exhaustion, you may need testing. Your provider might look at cortisol in your saliva, blood, or urine.

Saliva testing is especially helpful because it measures your free, active cortisol at different times during the day, right from home. If your cortisol curve is flat all day or high at the wrong times, that’s a red flag.

But remember, testing is just one piece. You also need to look at your symptoms and your lifestyle. That’s how you get a true, whole-person view of your health.

Effective Solutions for Managing Adrenal Exhaustion

There are ways to ease adrenal exhaustion. Here’s what can help:

  • First is Nutrition. Focus on whole foods and colorful meals. Key nutrients like vitamin C, E, B5, zinc, and selenium help support your adrenal glands.
  • Next is Meal Timing. Eat three balanced meals with two snacks to keep your energy steady throughout the day.
  • Third is Movement. Choose gentle options like restorative yoga, walking, or easy biking. Skip the hardcore workouts, they can make things worse.
  • Next is Breathing. Nose breathing and diaphragmatic techniques calm the stress response. Even a few minutes a day can make a difference.
  • And lastly, supplements. Supplements designed for adrenal support, like Dr. Lam’s Adrenal Daily Nutrient, combine essential vitamins, adaptogens, and herbal extracts. These blends may help balance cortisol levels, reduce inflammation, and restore energy by nourishing both your adrenals and related systems like digestion and immunity. Start low and go slow, especially if you’re sensitive, and always check with your healthcare provider before adding new supplements to your routine.

Support Your Energy. Support Your Life.

Adrenal exhaustion is real, but it’s also reversible.

You don’t have to live in constant fatigue. With the right support, the body can heal.
