Plot Twist…Your ‘Healthy’ Routine is Exhausting You

All those vitamins and supplements you take religiously? They might be the reason you feel worse than before you started. Dr. Carrie reveals when your supplement routine becomes self-sabotage.

Are You Going Through A Paradoxical Reaction? The Risks of Supplementation

What if the supplement meant to calm you… actually made things worse? Like feeling anxious after a “calm” pill, or wide awake after a sleep formula?

Hi, I’m Dr. Carrie. I’m a functional medicine doctor and adrenal recovery expert. And what you might be dealing with is called a paradoxical reaction.

In this video, we’ll explore why these reactions happen, even with natural supplements.

What Are Paradoxical Reactions?

So what exactly is a paradoxical reaction?

It’s when your body reacts in the opposite way of what a supplement or treatment is supposed to do. You take magnesium to feel calm and end up anxious. You take melatonin to sleep and end up wide awake.

These reactions aren’t rare. They can happen at any dose, with anything from vitamins to herbs. Even “organic” supplements aren’t off the hook.

And the more worn down your system is, the more likely you are to experience them.

How Adrenal Fatigue Triggers Paradoxical Reactions

Paradoxical reactions often show up when your system is already struggling, especially your adrenal glands.

Adrenal fatigue happens when chronic stress overwhelms your body. In early stages, your adrenal glands respond by pumping out more cortisol—your stress hormone. But over time, they get depleted and stop functioning properly.

That’s when you feel:

  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Brain fog
  • Cravings
  • Hormonal imbalance

When your adrenals are this compromised, even a well-intentioned supplement can overload your system and backfire. That’s how paradoxical reactions start.

The Detox Circuit Connection

When your detox pathways are underperforming, even helpful supplements can trigger adverse effects.

Your detox circuit; mainly your liver, immune system, and interstitial space is supposed to clear out toxins. But when it’s overloaded, toxins build up.

This leads to:

  • Mitochondria damage
  • Energy crashes
  • More sensitivity to everything, especially supplements

Instead of helping, they add to the load and make things worse.

What Supplements to Watch For

Here are some common supplements that may trigger paradoxical reactions:

Vitamins and Minerals:

  • B12 or any vitamin B: Stimulating in high doses
  • Vitamin C & E: Problematic if your system is congested
  • Magnesium: Can cause anxiety in some
  • NADH, Inositol, D-ribose: May spike energy or blood sugar unpredictably

Herbs and Glandulars:

  • Ashwagandha, Ginseng: Not ideal in advanced adrenal fatigue
  • Adrenal/Thyroid Glandulars: Can overstimulate or disrupt balance

Even collagen can cause GI issues if overdone.

Protect Yourself From Paradoxical Reactions

Supplements aren’t the enemy, but you have to know to use them safely, especially if you are recovering from adrenal fatigue or dealing with chronic issues.

To protect yourself from paradoxical reactions:

  • Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting anything new
  • Avoid detoxes if you feel weak, fatigued, or in a later stage of adrenal fatigue
  • Focus on a clean diet, think more fruits and vegetables, less sugar, and processed foods
  • Keep a journal of your reactions and symptoms to share with your doctor
  • Support your detox organs, like your liver and lymphatic system, before you add supplements to your routine

You Know Your Body Best

Supplements can help, if your body is ready for them.

If your system sends warning signs, listen. It’s likely calling for recovery, not more effort.

Be gentle. Ask questions. Tune in.
