Do you get brain fog from perfume, nausea from fresh paint, or anxiety from plastics? Most people brush these symptoms off, but they reveal something deeper. In this video, Dr. Carrie talks about what your body is really telling you, and why it reacts this way.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivities: The Delicate Body
Are you familiar with the experience of entering a room and being overwhelmed by a smell that no one else appears to notice? Maybe it’s the scent of nail polish, a plastic container, or fresh paint. For some, these everyday exposures can lead to real symptoms: dizziness, brain fog, even anxiety.
Hi, I’m Dr. Carrie, a functional medicine doctor and adrenal expert. If this sounds like you, you might be experiencing something called multiple chemical sensitivities, or MCS. It’s more common than you might think, especially in people with advanced adrenal fatigue.
Let’s break down what’s really going on inside your body.
Chemical Buildup and a Congested Body
We live in a world filled with chemicals. They’re in our food, cleaning products, shampoos, and even the air we breathe.
When your adrenal glands are healthy, your body can filter these toxins pretty easily. But when adrenal fatigue sets in, that system starts to slow down. The body tries to conserve energy. The liver becomes congested. It can’t keep up with breaking down chemicals anymore.
So what happens? The overload builds up. And this toxic backlog triggers inflammation, stress, and those hypersensitive reactions that seem to come out of nowhere.
When Everyday Products Trigger a Reaction
Do you know what are some of the worst triggers that can make you dizzy or anxious? They are the things you probably use every day such as nail polish, plastics, and paint. Their fumes can hit hard when your system is overloaded.
Even if these never bothered you before, your body may suddenly react. This isn’t in your head. It’s your body throwing up a red flag.
The reason? Your liver is tired. Your cells are inflamed. Your extracellular matrix, that’s the space between your cells, starts filling with toxins. And the more your body struggles, the more energy it burns trying to handle the damage.
The Vicious Cycle of Inflammation and Sensitivity
The more toxins you absorb, the more inflammation builds up. That inflammation overworks your cells, which makes them produce more waste. That waste clogs your liver even more. And soon, you’re sensitive to just about everything.
You may notice weird reactions: lightheadedness from a cell phone, headaches under fluorescent lights, anxiety around new scents. These are your body’s way of screaming, “Please stop. I can’t keep up.”
How to Begin Reversing Chemical Sensitivities
If your body reacts to everything, it is not acting abnormally; you are sensitive.
Start by listening to your body. If a product causes dizziness, remove it. If a room makes you anxious, step out. These reactions are real, not imagined.
Avoiding triggers isn’t always possible, but you can reduce exposure. Eat organic. Filter your water. Use non-toxic cleaners. Unplug electronics. Detox your environment and your body will slowly catch up.
Detoxing the Right Way for a Fragile Body
Be very careful with detox. When you’re already weak, even a good change can overwhelm your system. Always go slow.
Supplements like glutathione, milk thistle, dandelion root, and folic acid can help. So can turn for clearing the extracellular matrix. But more isn’t always better. The delivery method matters. The timing matters. You need a tailored approach that respects where your body is.
You Can Heal, But Gently
You don’t have to live in a bubble. Total avoidance isn’t realistic. But you can lighten the load.
Reduce what you can. Be kind to your body. Let healing come slowly, without forcing it.
