Heart & Circulation
High Cholesterol
High cholesterol means there are too many fats (lipids) circulating in your blood, especially LDL (often called “bad” cholesterol). Over time, extra LDL can contribute to sticky plaque buildup inside the arteries, which can slow healthy blood flow and raise long-term cardiovascular risk.

Common Symptoms
High cholesterol usually has no symptoms. Many people feel completely normal and only discover it on a blood test.
Even without symptoms, certain patterns can be a clue that cholesterol may be trending high:
- A family history of high cholesterol, early heart disease, heart attack, or stroke
- Past lab results showing high LDL, high triglycerides, or low HDL
- Weight gain over time, especially around the midsection
- Blood sugar swings, cravings, or signs of insulin resistance
- High blood pressure or “borderline” cardiovascular numbers
- Conditions that can affect cholesterol balance (thyroid issues, diabetes, PCOS, kidney disease, lupus, HIV)
Likely Root Causes and Contributors
- Genetics (including familial hypercholesterolemia and elevated lipoprotein(a))
- Diet patterns high in saturated fats, trans fats, and ultra-processed foods
- Low activity level and long periods of sitting
- Extra body weight
- Smoking or nicotine use
- Alcohol use (especially when triglycerides run high)
- Chronic stress and poor sleep (often tied to appetite changes, cravings, and metabolic strain)
- Medical conditions that shift lipid processing (hypothyroidism, diabetes, kidney or liver disease, sleep apnea, inflammatory conditions)
- Certain medications that can worsen cholesterol numbers

Patient Pain Points We Often Hear
“I feel fine, so it’s hard to take this seriously.”
“My numbers keep creeping up even though I’m trying to eat better.”
“I am confused by my results, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and what matters most.”
Our Approach to Healing
How We Map, Treat, and Sustain Real Recovery from High Cholesterol with the LAM Method™
High cholesterol is often a sign that your body is struggling with how it moves fats, handles inflammation, and repairs blood vessel lining over time. Our goal is to lower risk in a way that is steady, personalized, and realistic, especially if you have stress overload, metabolic strain, or a family history. At Lam Clinic, our approach to healing uses the three phases of LAM Method™: Learn the Why, Address the Root, Maximize Longevity. Here’s how we use the LAM Method™ to address High Cholesterol.
Phase 1 of LAM Method™
Learn the Why of High Cholesterol
At Lam Clinic, the first step is identifying the root causes behind your cholesterol pattern. High cholesterol is rarely just about diet. It often reflects deeper shifts in metabolism, inflammation, stress adaptation, hormone balance, liver processing, or genetics.
With high cholesterol, the Cardionomic Circuit is most commonly affected. This circuit governs blood vessel health, circulation, autonomic balance, and cardiovascular regulation.
Most useful tests for high cholesterol:
- Lipid panel: total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides.
- Advanced lipid markers (when results are unclear, risk is higher, or family history is strong):
- Apolipoprotein B (apoB)
- Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]
- LDL particle number and size
- Blood sugar and insulin markers (especially if triglycerides are high or weight is increasing): fasting glucose, fasting insulin, hemoglobin A1c.
- Inflammation marker: hs-CRP (helps reveal hidden inflammatory risk).
- Thyroid panel (when thyroid symptoms, fatigue, or stubborn cholesterol patterns are present): TSH, Free T4, Free T3.
- Carotid ultrasound (when risk is higher or long-standing): a non-invasive look at plaque risk and blood flow in the arteries that supply the brain.

Phase 2 of LAM Method™
Address the Root of High Cholesterol
Once Lam Clinic understands what is driving your cholesterol pattern, a personalized plan is built around your physiology, stress tolerance, and long-term goals.
Phase 2 is organized into three core areas:
Lifestyle Foundations
- Replace saturated and ultra-processed fats with olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado, and fatty fish
- Increase soluble fiber from oats, beans, lentils, chia, flax, and vegetables
- Choose more plant-forward meals and reduce red meat and processed meats
- Cut back on refined carbs and added sugar, especially if triglycerides are elevated
- Do regular aerobic exercise such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming
- Support healthy weight loss if abdominal fat is contributing to lipid imbalance
Targeted Supplement Support
Only a small number of supplements are prioritized, based on your specific lipid pattern and lab findings.
- Red Yeast Rice (with CoQ10 support): Helpful when LDL is elevated due to increased cholesterol production in the liver.
- Berberine: Especially useful when high cholesterol overlaps with insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides, or blood sugar instability.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA): Most helpful when triglycerides are elevated or inflammatory markers are high.
IV Therapies
For patients who require additional support, we may incorporate:
- IV Nutrient Therapy
- IV Ozone Autohemotherapy
These therapies may help support vascular health, improve circulation and cellular resilience, and replenish key nutrients involved in metabolic and cardiovascular balance, which can be helpful when high cholesterol is linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, or poor nutrient status.
This information is educational, not a prescription. Your actual plan is always individualized, adjusted slowly, and refined based on how your body responds.
Phase 3 of LAM Method™
Maximize Longevity
As your system stabilizes, we simplify and shift toward long-term maintenance:
- Clear daily habits you can sustain.
- Periodic labs to track trends early.
- Support through travel, holidays, and stressful seasons.
NEM Response Circuits
How Your Body Regulate Stress
Your body handles stress through six interconnected circuits. When even one is out of balance, symptoms can show up in your heart, hormones, energy, and more.

Take the QuizFrequently Asked Questions
Can Lam Clinic help with high cholesterol?
Yes. We first learn the “why,” such as insulin resistance, thyroid or hormone shifts, liver and bile flow issues, inflammation, gut imbalance, or medication effects. Then we create a personalized plan to support metabolism, circulation, and healthier cholesterol patterns for long-term heart health.
When should you get your cholesterol checked?
Many adults start screening around age 20 and repeat testing every 4 to 6 years, but you may need checks more often if you have risk factors or a strong family history. Children are often screened at least once in late childhood, and earlier if there is a family history of early heart disease.
What do LDL, HDL, and triglycerides mean?
LDL is the type most tied to plaque buildup, HDL helps carry cholesterol back to the liver, and triglycerides are another blood fat linked to metabolic strain. Your overall pattern matters more than any single number.
If high cholesterol runs in my family, can lifestyle still help?
Yes, lifestyle still matters, but inherited patterns like familial hypercholesterolemia or elevated Lp(a) can make numbers harder to shift. In those cases, the goal is smarter testing, clearer risk assessment, and a plan that matches what you can and cannot control.
Do you offer virtual visits and where are you located?
Yes. We offer secure telehealth visits worldwide and in-person care at our clinic in Tustin, California. We proudly serve patients across Orange County, including Irvine, Santa Ana, Orange, Costa Mesa, and Anaheim, as well as individuals throughout the United States and internationally who want personalized high cholesterol and NEM stress response care from the comfort of home.

The Lam Family has helped thousands recover from fatigue and stress for years.
Using advanced diagnostics and whole-body care, the Lam family looks beyond routine labs to uncover the real reasons behind fatigue—like adrenal stress, hormone imbalance, and nutrient depletion. Then, they create a personalized plan to help you heal fully and feel like yourself again.
The Pioneer of Root-Cause Healing & Whole Person Care
Before adrenal fatigue was widely understood, Dr. Michael Lam, M.D. led the way—developing one of the first clinical approaches to diagnose and treat it. His bestselling book, Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome, became a lifeline for patients around the world. Today, his children—Dr. Carrie Lam and Dr. Jeremy Lam—carry that legacy forward, building on his foundation with advanced diagnostics and whole-person care for lasting recovery.
