Whether from a professional or your partner at home, a massage session always feels very refreshing when you have muscle stiffness and tension. Massage can do much more than just make your muscles loose, though. There are centuries worth of evidence on the benefits of massage in managing different health conditions, and Adrenal Fatigue patients increasingly turn to massage therapy to manage their symptoms. This article will consider the benefits and risks of an Adrenal Fatigue massage, so you can decide whether you should get one.

What Is the Relationship Between Massage Therapy and Adrenal Fatigue?

An image of a man and woman getting a massageMassage therapy involves applying mechanical pressure to soft tissues to produce various physiological effects, including changes in cortisol levels and parasympathetic activity. These physiological effects are the basis of the relationship between massage therapy and Adrenal Fatigue.

Cortisol is a hormone the adrenal glands produce to manage stress. Healthcare providers can assess stress levels in the body by measuring cortisol production patterns, with higher cortisol levels translating to higher stress levels. Parasympathetic nervous system activity is also related to stress, as the parasympathetic nervous system is concerned with transitioning the body from a stressed state to a relaxed state. Higher parasympathetic activity means lower stress levels.

Studies show that massage therapy can reduce cortisol production and increase parasympathetic activity (1,2). Therefore, massage therapy is associated with lower stress levels in the body, which is where its use in managing Adrenal Fatigue comes into play. When the body faces stress, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is activated, eventually resulting in the production and release of cortisol by the adrenal glands. The sympathetic nervous system also dominates over the parasympathetic system, prepping the body to manage stress.

After the body effectively deals with the stressful experience, cortisol returns to baseline levels, and the parasympathetic nervous system becomes the dominant autonomic nervous system again. However, when there is chronic stress (stress that persists for extended periods), cortisol levels do not return to baseline levels, and parasympathetic activity is also not as dominant.

Since the adrenal glands produce cortisol, they can become fatigued over time when stress is chronic. This is when Adrenal Fatigue occurs. Adrenal Fatigue also suppresses the parasympathetic system, causing the body to remain constantly stressed. Therefore, any therapy option that can reduce stress levels can theoretically help manage Adrenal Fatigue, and this explains the use of massage therapy in managing Adrenal Fatigue.

What Are the Benefits of Adrenal Fatigue Massage?

An Adrenal Fatigue massage has multiple benefits for Adrenal Fatigue patients, with these benefits typically revolving around improving symptoms. Some of these benefits are listed below.

Relieves Stress

The most important benefit of an Adrenal Fatigue massage is that it relieves stress, which is observed in the reduction of cortisol. The adrenal glands produce cortisol in response to stress in the body. When cortisol production increases, stress levels have increased. If stress becomes chronic, the adrenal glands may weaken, and adrenal fatigue results.

Cortisol production is actually high in the early stages of Adrenal Fatigue, as the adrenal glands work extremely hard to keep up with the body’s cortisol demands. In the later stages of Adrenal Fatigue, however, cortisol production starts to fall. While health practitioners generally associate lower cortisol production with lower stress levels, this is not the case in the later stages of Adrenal Fatigue.

Instead, cortisol production is low because there is a problem with the Hormone circuit of the NeuroEndoMetabolic (NEM) Stress Response system. The NEM consists of six circuits (including the Hormone circuit) that span different organs and systems and ensure the body is constantly and effectively managing stress. The adrenal glands are part of the hormone circuit, and problems with the hormone circuit during Adrenal Fatigue affect adrenal function as well.

On the other hand, the reduced cortisol production observed in Adrenal Fatigue massage is due to a reduction in stress levels rather than a problem with adrenal function. Also, besides reducing cortisol production (an objective way of assessing stress), massage can help benefit subjective measures of stress. In a study where participants had to undergo a massage program twice a week for three months, they self-reported an improvement in their stress levels at the end of each month (3).

Manage Mental Health Problems

An image of a happy manThe biochemical effects of massage therapy extend beyond hormones, as it also influences the levels of two of the most common neurotransmitters in the body, dopamine and serotonin. Interestingly, although dopamine and serotonin are known as the “happy hormones,” they are both neurotransmitters. Massage therapy can increase the levels of dopamine and serotonin (4).

Dopamine is responsible for the feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, and reward, while serotonin primarily regulates mood, memory, and learning. Together, dopamine and serotonin help to preserve positive feelings and calm mental health. An underproduction of these neurotransmitters plays a significant role in the development of mental health problems like anxiety and depression.

Adrenal Fatigue can also cause symptoms like depression and anxiety. Therefore, Adrenal Fatigue massage may help manage mental health problems, like depression and anxiety.

Improve Sleep Quality

Sleep problems are some of the most typical symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue, and many patients have trouble getting quality sleep at night. Adrenal Fatigue massage can help improve sleep quality through its effects on serotonin and cortisol production.

Serotonin is essential not only for regulating mood but also helping to induce and maintain sleep. Its role in the quality of sleep is largely due to its being a chemical precursor for melatonin (the sleep hormone). Serotonin also promotes calmness and relaxation, which are essential for falling and staying asleep.

In addition, the sleep problems Adrenal Fatigue patients face, these problems may carry over to daytime fatigue, and remaining awake throughout the day may be problematic for many. Serotonin, which can promote wakefulness, also helps with this.

Adrenal Fatigue massage is also associated with reduced cortisol levels. High cortisol levels correspond to worse sleep, as the body increases cortisol production in response to stressful situations that require active management. A body remaining very active at night time is not a recipe for quality sleep.

Boosts Immune Function

Yet another symptom of Adrenal Fatigue is a higher susceptibility to infections due to reduced immune function. Massage therapy can help address this symptom by boosting immunity. One of the primary mechanisms behind this benefit is the increased production of white blood cells, which fight off foreign invaders in the body (5).

Other effects of massage therapy may also contribute to better immunity, like increased blood and lymphatic flow, better sleep quality, and reduced stress levels. Adrenal Fatigue massage likely combines all of these effects to improve immune function and make patients more resilient to infections.

What Are the Risks of Adrenal Fatigue Massage?

While Adrenal Fatigue massage has clear, evidence-based benefits, it also has risks. Before making a decision on whether or not to get an Adrenal Fatigue massage, it is crucial to consider both its benefits and risks. Here are some of the risks of Adrenal Fatigue massage.

May Worsen Adrenal Fatigue

Massage therapy encompasses various massage types and techniques, with variations usually in the type and intensity of pressure and the specific application area. Some massage types involve deep tissue manipulation, which usually causes microscopic tears in muscle fibers. The body responds to these microscopic tears by stimulating its healing process.

There are four distinct stages of the body’s healing process: hemostasis (blood clotting), inflammation, proliferation (tissue regrowth), and maturation. Inflammation (the second stage of healing) can increase stress levels in the body, worsening Adrenal Fatigue in some people. The extent of inflammation depends on the extent of microscopic injury to tissues. Therefore, more intense Adrenal Fatigue massage sessions will produce more inflammation, which may cause more negative effects on Adrenal Fatigue symptoms, particularly for people in the later stages of Adrenal Fatigue.

Short-Term Results

Different studies attest to massage’s ability to reduce stress levels, mostly through its influence on hormone levels and neurotransmitters. Specifically, the levels of the hormone cortisol and neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin change after a massage session. Cortisol levels fall while dopamine and serotonin levels rise.

However, these biochemical changes are not long-term, and cortisol, serotonin, and dopamine levels return to the baseline shortly after the massage therapy. The exact number of hours the hormone and neurotransmitter changes last is still unclear, but most studies report a fall after a few hours.

Inadequate as a Standalone Therapy

An image of a man and woman eating fruitsAdrenal Fatigue massage alone cannot help manage Adrenal Fatigue. This is an important point to note, as the short-term benefits of the therapy can sway the minds of many Adrenal Fatigue patients away from other, more lasting therapy options.

There is no single therapy option that can guarantee the holistic management of Adrenal Fatigue. However, some options, like dietary modifications and lifestyle changes, are centerpieces in any Adrenal Fatigue recovery plan. This is not the case with massage therapy; it cannot be the main therapy option in any Adrenal Fatigue management plan.

Should You Get an Adrenal Fatigue Massage?

Adrenal Fatigue massage has multiple benefits, the chief of which is its ability to relieve stress and improve parasympathetic activity. Massage therapy can also help manage mental health problems, improve sleep quality, and boost immune function – all important benefits to Adrenal Fatigue patients.

On the other hand, Adrenal Fatigue massage therapy may actually worsen Adrenal Fatigue and its symptoms in some cases. In addition, the positive results of the therapy seem to be short-lived. Considering the relatively short-lived improvements after massage therapy, it is logical to suggest multiple sessions, but research shows that the improvements are not cumulative (6). So, getting more massage sessions will not necessarily mean better effects. Massage therapy is also severely inadequate as a standalone Adrenal Fatigue therapy option.

In light of the benefits and risks of massage therapy, a suitable conclusion to settle on is that you can and should get Adrenal Fatigue massage therapy if you want to improve your symptoms in the short term and are already taking other dietary and lifestyle steps to manage your condition. You should not use Adrenal Fatigue massage therapy as a replacement for other care options.

Patients must consider other management options, including diet, lifestyle changes, and supplements, for a more comprehensive management of Adrenal Fatigue. There are thousands of supplements available today. However, we have identified one that contains all the right ingredients in the right proportion for managing Adrenal Fatigue symptoms.

Adrenal Stress Control by Dr. Lam™

Adrenal Stress Control is a specialized supplement that supports adrenal, collagen, and cardiovascular health. This advanced formula combines prebiotics, amino acids (including lysine, proline, glycine, and glutamine), vitamins (vitamin C), and immune-enhancing nutrients to reverse the catabolic effects of stress. Adrenal Stress Control promotes adrenal function, improved skin, and enhanced heart function without overstimulating the body.

How Do You Choose the Right Adrenal Fatigue Massage Therapy?

Here are a few important parameters to consider before getting an Adrenal Fatigue massage.

Intensity

The best massage for Adrenal Fatigue is one that is strong enough to stimulate the calming effects, but not so intense that there will be significant microscopic fiber tears, as this can increase inflammation and worsen Adrenal Fatigue symptoms. Communicate your needs to your massage therapist and ensure you arrive at the right balance of intensity and positive massage effects.

Frequency

The positive effects of Adrenal Fatigue are not cumulative, implying that having several sessions in a short period will not provide any significant, sustained benefits. In fact, having too many within a short period can worsen Adrenal Fatigue by increasing inflammation and stress. Therefore, you should get Adrenal Fatigue massage only for short-term benefits and not consider it a viable long-term option.

As to the exact frequency, once a week can be a healthy number, but you should talk to a professional for more information. You can contact us at Lam Clinic for consultations and more information.

Location

Where you get your massage influences the quality of the massage and the eventual effects on your stress levels. Quality massage centers are knowledgeable about a wide range of techniques and understand the importance of personalized care. Always go to a trusted professional for therapeutic massage sessions. If you are unsure of which professional represents your best interest, don’t hesitate to speak to your healthcare provider.

Conclusion

Adrenal Fatigue massage can positively affect stress levels, mental health, sleep quality, and immune function. These effects are generally achieved through reduced cortisol levels and increased dopamine and serotonin production. However, massage therapy may worsen Adrenal Fatigue if it is too intense or overused, it cannot be the center of any serious Adrenal Fatigue recovery plan, and its benefits are short-lived. Therefore, proper Adrenal Fatigue management requires other care options like dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, and supplements like Adrenal Stress Control.

Dr. Lam’s Key Questions

Yes, massage therapy can worsen Adrenal Fatigue symptoms in some cases, depending on the type, intensity, and frequency of sessions. Intense massage sessions targeting deep tissues can cause significant microscopic tears in muscle fibers, stimulating inflammatory responses that can worsen Adrenal Fatigue symptoms. Frequent, less intense sessions may also produce similar effects on inflammation.
